VIN VERIFICATION / INSPECTION
A VIN inspection is a physical inspection of the vehicle's unique identification number for title and registration purposes. The Sheriff's Office provides VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) verifications.

- VIN verifications are required when you purchase a vehicle or move from another state to Colorado and need your vehicle registered here.
- The buyer or vehicle owner is required to have a bill of sale or vehicle registration in the vehicle and proof of insurance.

VIN FAQs
(CRS 42-3-126) Registration Upon Transfer, allows operation of a motor vehicle without registering the vehicle only in the following situations:
- The vehicle is exempt from registration
- The vehicle has been temporarily registered
- Purchased on a weekend, legal holiday or between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m.
- Purchased from someone who is not a motor vehicle dealer;
- The vehicle can only be driven from where the seller kept it to where the buyer intends to keep it.
One typically will need a VIN inspection and verification when:
- Moved to Colorado from another state
- Purchased a vehicle from another state
- Purchased a vehicle without a title
- In need of a title corrections
- Other similar or special circumstance
You must have one of the following:
- Title for the Vehicle
- Bill of Sale (or Title)
- Vehicle Registration
VIN inspections can be done at any location within Eagle County as long as the vehicle is present.
- VIN inspections can be completed at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, 0885 E. Chambers Ave. in Eagle, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except to observe legal holidays.
- A Deputy can respond to your location for the VIN inspection by calling (970) 479-2201. (Please keep in mind that our deputies base their call response on urgency and will get to you as soon as they can.
- $10 if you come to our main office in Eagle to have your inspection completed
- $20 if you would like a deputy to come to your location.
Yes. Each vehicle requires a separate VIN inspection.
A Certified VIN Inspections may be required in circumstances involving:
- Out of the country vehicles and Canadian vehicles
- Bonded titles
- Salvage titles
- Other similar or special circumstances
