VIN VERIFICATION / INSPECTION

A VIN inspection is a physical inspection of the vehicle's unique identification number for title and registration purposes. The Sheriff's Office provides VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) verifications.
  • VIN verifications are required when you purchase a vehicle or move from another state to Colorado and need your vehicle registered here.
  • The buyer or vehicle owner is required to have a bill of sale or vehicle registration in the vehicle and proof of insurance.
VIN LOCATIONS / HOURS

VIN Verification inspections in Eagle County are available in person ($10 fee) at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office main office.
  • Location : inside the Eagle County Justice Center located at 0885 E. Chambers Ave, Eagle, CO 81631.
  • Hours : Monday - Fridays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (closed to observe legal holidays)

VIN inspections are also available in the Town of Avon ($10 fee) for passenger vehicles only at the Eagle County Avon Annex Bldg.
  • Location: 100 W. Beaver Creek Blvd. #107, Avon, CO 81620.
  • Hours : Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays by appointment only.

VIN VERIFICATION FEES

$10 per vehicle at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, 0885 E. Chambers Ave, Eagle, CO.
  • Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit cards.
  • Checks are made payable to the Eagle County Sheriff's Office.
$20 per vehicle if a Deputy needs to respond to your residence or business location.

Can I drive a newly purchased vehicle if it's after hours, over the weekend or on a public holiday?
(CRS 42-3-126) Registration Upon Transfer, allows operation of a motor vehicle without registering the vehicle only in the following situations:
  • The vehicle is exempt from registration
  • The vehicle has been temporarily registered
For the first 36 hours after purchase a buyer can drive the vehicle only if:
  • Purchased on a weekend, legal holiday or between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Purchased from someone who is not a motor vehicle dealer;
  • The vehicle can only be driven from where the seller kept it to where the buyer intends to keep it.
When do I need a VIN inspection?
One typically will need a VIN inspection and verification when:
  • Moved to Colorado from another state
  • Purchased a vehicle from another state
  • Purchased a vehicle without a title
  • In need of a title corrections
  • Other similar or special circumstance
What documents are required to complete a VIN inspection?
You must have one of the following:
  • Title for the Vehicle
  • Bill of Sale (or Title)
  • Vehicle Registration
Where can I get a VIN inspection?
VIN inspections can be done at any location within Eagle County as long as the vehicle is present.
  • VIN inspections can be completed at the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, 0885 E. Chambers Ave. in Eagle, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except to observe legal holidays.
  • A Deputy can respond to your location for the VIN inspection by calling (970) 479-2201. (Please keep in mind that our deputies base their call response on urgency and will get to you as soon as they can.
What are the fees associated with having a VIN inspection?
  • $10 if you come to our main office in Eagle to have your inspection completed
  • $20 if you would like a deputy to come to your location.
Will I be charged a fee for each vehicle I have a VIN inspection completed on?
Yes. Each vehicle requires a separate VIN inspection.
How do I know if I need a Certified VIN Inspection?
A Certified VIN Inspections may be required in circumstances involving:
  • Out of the country vehicles and Canadian vehicles
  • Bonded titles
  • Salvage titles
  • Other similar or special circumstances
